Project Overview
Key definitions
Identity Theft Protection (ITP): A service and feature set by Discover Financial Services (DFS) that monitors personal information and identity and offers resolution specialists
Friends & Family (F&F): The ability for existing DFS members to add friends or family members to their protection plan
Broad Market (BM): The ability for brand new non-Discover users without a Discover card to enroll in ITP
I joined the Friends & Family (F&F) feature project for Discover's Identity Theft Protection (ITP) service midway through its design and development. We continued to refine the feature with five different Agile teams before its launch in December 2020. Afterward, I worked on another feature, Broad Market (BM), which allowed users to enroll in ITP without a Discover account or card, using another vendor to handle the transactions of non-Discover cards. We faced a design bottleneck due to the new design system and had to update all the enrollment screens to use the new components before the feature launched in mid-April. I also worked on improving the design Kanban board to avoid future bottlenecks. Following the launch of Broad Market, I focused on implementing accessibility standards and requirements for Identity Theft Protection's enrollment, performing manual accessibility tests and training Discover employees on accessibility considerations to aim toward meeting WCAG 2.1 compliance requirements.

Usability test (PDf Design System Guide integration)
Press on either image below to open an Adobe XD prototype (mobile prototypes included in link) showcasing what we usability tested on eight participants. Our goal was to better understand some of the nuances of the Broad Market enrollment flow and hopefully condense some of the screens from the Friends & Family release into a single screen, as shown in the second of the two iterations shown below.

What worked?
The number of iterations of the screens overall to improve and tweak the designs of the enrollment flow allowed for many design considerations. My visual design skills definitely were utilized heavily during the early stages of Broad Market’s conception. I became more integrated into one of the development teams and worked closely with them to continuously iterate and validate designs to ensure technical feasibility while prioritizing what could reasonably go into the MVP launch.
What to improve for next time?
I think I learned quite a bit in this project about external factors that can affect the design process. The new design system that I was originally working from was handed off in PDF form, which essentially had me guestimating certain elements of the UI (like the pixel spacing between form fields). I synced often with other designers working on the Bank side of Discover’s ecosystem internally to ensure mutual understanding of the components that have changed in the new design system and those that didn’t match one-to-one. We eventually received the new design system a month before the product was intended to launch, which bottlenecked my design effort as I had to then go back through each screen and create each of them again with the new design components from the design system itself. We eventually made process improvements including a design request form, requests from which I routed to a Design Kanban board I managed to have specific and nuanced exit criteria to ensure this bottleneck didn’t happen again.
